Character:
Name: Plague Knight
Age: Late 20s
Gender: Male
Canon: Shovel Knight: A Plague of Shadows
Canon Point: Just a few days after the events of the Plague of Shadows campaign
History: Wiki page link
Personality:

Plague Knight is enthusiastic. It doesn't take a genius to see it- whether it's his long term goals, or just a walk through a conquered Armor Outpost, he throws himself wholly into everything he does with an almost frantic, frenzied energy. Quick to laugh, or make a joke- almost always involving the word BOOM- he's just one of those people that never seems to slow down and take a breather!

He's also a bit of a romantic. Everything he does- joining the Order of No Quarter, his quest to collect the essences of the different knights and brew the mighty Serum Supernus- it's all for the woman he loves. Both the little things, like learning how to dance because he's seen her dancing alone and wishing for a partner. Or the big things, like the lengths he's willing to go to, to become strong enough, worthy enough of her love, it's all for her. If only he'd had the confidence to tell her earlier.

Plague Knight is quite passionate. When it comes to the things that he cares about, he's willing to devote great effort to seeing them through, sometimes to the point that his feelings and desires get the better of him, and he becomes blind to what he has right in front of him.

Plague Knight is amoral. While those he's close to he seems to genuinely care about, when it comes to his business operations, and the advancement of the art of alchemy, Plague Knight shows a very clear lack of any kind of moral compass. Willing to join the Order of No Quarter to serve his own goals, seeing nothing wrong with bombing his own minions when they irritate him or rebel against his draconian rule, nor with experimenting on them if they fail to live up to his standards. Though having been hailed as a hero for destroying the Tower of Fate, and brought into the spotlight, may have made him start to reconsider his methods, it will be some time before any lasting change is wrought.

Plague Knight is brash. Loud, in your face, and attention grabbing, he always makes his presence known in an explosive manner. He seems to think very highly of himself- and if he thinks poorly of another, he'll not hesitate for a moment to voice his opinion. Cocksure and audacious, the only people he seems to publically respect are other craftsmen and scientists, and even that can be a mixed bag. Why shouldn't he be cocky? He brewed the ultimate potion, after all!

That of course, brings us to the final point. It's all a front. Plague Knight lacks self confidence. The mask isn't just for show, or to be a costume piece- he hides himself, his feelings, and his perceived inadequacies behind that beaked mask so that he can show the world only what he wants them to see. Until he had almost completed the Serum Supernus, he believed himself unworthy of love. He blusters and postures, but the one time another knight fired back, there was no snappy comeback. He's a small dog in a big world, and even after finding out that the target of his affections had always loved him back, even after brewing the ultimate potion, the pinnacle of the alchemist's art, those feelings of inadequacy will never fully go away.

So what is he to the rest of the world? Well, until very recently, he was practically an exile among the people of the Valley. And after that, a monster- a member of the Enchantress' Order of No Quarter, an oppressor. Perhaps, to some degree, they were right to fear him and his alchemy, he's never been a very good person, after all. But after the climactic events that occurred at the Tower of Fate, he and the so called, "Team Plague", have been hailed as heroes for assisting in taking down the evil Enchantress. While he himself laughs at the idea of being a hero, the fact that his alchemy is now praised, and no longer reviled, the fact that he no longer has to operate in secret like a villain, perhaps it has planted the seed of something virtuous in him.

To his minions, he's a draconian ruler to be feared. To his peers, he's a brilliant alchemist with whom to pool their efforts. To the people, he's a hero now.

Of course, discounting his love for Mona, the driving force that motivated him had always been the advancement of the art of alchemy. Even when his art was reviled and feared, that didn't stop him from building the Explodatorium and the Potionarium, dedicated to brewing better potions, and, more importantly, crafting better bombs.

But his love for Mona cannot be understated- it motivated him to change the world, to scour the world in pursuit of the ingredients to brew a potion that might make him worthy of her affections. Having attained that love, now the betterment of alchemy drives him forward even more strongly, to impress a peer and lover he cares for deeply, and to work beside her forevermore.

When it comes to difficult situations, conflict especially, Plague Knight never lets them get him down. He never panics, even when things are going quite terribly wrong- after all, researching in a place called the Explodatorium rather inures one to disaster-, and even when faced with life threatening danger, or even heartbreak, he hides his true feelings behind his mask, and blusters and jokes the same as always.

The Serum Supernus, a brew said to be so powerful that drinking it could give the imbiber anything they want. Let them do anything they want. Sadly, this mixture, distilled from Plague Knight's memories of that fabled elixir, is just a pale imitation. Still, upon brewing it, Plague Knight may either choose to drink the potion, dramatically increasing his combat capabilities for 2 rounds, increasing slightly in duration at higher levels of power, or, alternatively, give the brew a gentle shake. This destabilizes the contents completely, and it must be thrown immediately, exploding for moderate damage in a large area.
